THE SURFACE

The stones are perfectly round

And unblemished

I pick one up

It is far too bright and shiny

And my reflection on its surface

Is smooth

There are no cracks or crevices

No creases or lines

I frown but my reflection

Remains the same

Still frowning I drop the stone

I kick at it and the others

Spreading them far and wide
